Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what our clients ask most.
About us
What does World Sound & Vision do?
Since 1986 we have delivered integrated sound and vision solutions: digitizing, restoring and archiving film, tape and documents, physical asset management, data migration and visual effects, alongside media production, marketing, events, research and technology development.
Do you work with government and private entities?
Yes. Our clients include ministries, universities, hospitals, authorities and major companies in the Kingdom and beyond; some are listed under Partners in success on the About page.
Digitization
Which media can you digitize?
Video tapes in analog and digital formats such as VHS, Betamax, U-matic, Betacam, Digital Betacam, D5, HDCAM, Mini DV and DVCAM; audio on reel-to-reel, DAT, cassette and vinyl; film from 8 to 70mm and slides; CDs, DVDs and floppy disks; photos and negatives; documents, manuscripts and maps; microfilm and microfiche.
At what resolution do you scan film?
We scan film on the Scanity scanner in HDR up to 8K. We recommend scanning once at the highest resolution for preservation and deriving 4K and 2K copies at the same time for screening and broadcast, so the original negative needn't be handled again.
Can you digitize a damaged tape or fragile film?
Often, yes. We inspect the item first, then clean, repair and stabilize it before digitization. Fragile or shrunken film is handled on dedicated equipment that minimizes stress on it.
Is the soundtrack on the film digitized too?
Yes. The scanner reads optical soundtracks on 16mm and 35mm film and magnetic tracks on 16mm in the same scanning pass, and converts them into WAV files synced with the picture.
Do you digitize documents and records?
Yes. We scan loose sheets, volumes, registers, books and large-format maps with non-destructive methods for fragile documents, and make them searchable with multi-language OCR and handwriting recognition.
In what formats do you deliver files?
Usually a high-quality preservation master and a light access copy: video for preservation and publishing, uncompressed audio plus a listening copy, high-resolution images, and searchable PDFs for documents. Final formats are agreed with you based on your use.
Restoration and preservation
What's the difference between restoration and preventive conservation?
Restoration treats damage that has happened, such as tears, shrinkage, stickiness and chemical decay. Preventive conservation stops damage before it starts through safe storage, handling and a controlled environment. Together they reduce repeated restoration and keep originals closer to their first state.
Do you treat vinegar syndrome and nitrate decay?
Yes. We treat chemically deteriorated film and restore its flexibility so it can be scanned, then protect it with molecular sieves in a cool, stable environment to slow further decay.
Do you restore sound too?
Yes. We treat hiss, clicks, hum, wow and flutter and dropouts, from mono up to 5.1.
Do you colorize black-and-white film and photos?
Yes. AI proposes the colors, then our artists review them by hand against historical references, keeping the original work's aesthetics.
Archiving and asset management
How do you organize the archive after digitization?
Every item is catalogued with precise metadata compatible with international archiving standards, so it can be searched by title, date, place, subject or medium.
Do you manage physical assets after digitization?
Yes. We provide a vault management system that tracks every reel and tape by location, condition and movement, with RFID, NFC and GPS tracking, and links each asset to its digital copy.
Can you move our data off old storage?
Yes. We move data from traditional drives, older LTO generations and HSM systems to SSD, the cloud or LTO-9, verifying every file with a digital fingerprint and removing duplicates.
Visits and contact
Can we visit the center to see the work?
Yes. The center is on King Fahd Road in Al Olaya, Riyadh, next to King Fahd National Library, and you're welcome to watch the process yourself. We recommend arranging the visit in advance through the contact page.
Are materials sent outside the Kingdom?
No need. Materials are processed inside the Kingdom, keeping content protected and reducing the costs, risks and delays of shipping fragile media.
What are your hours and how do I start?
We work Sunday to Thursday, 10 AM to 6 PM. Start by requesting a consultation from the contact page, and a specialist will get back to you to understand what you have and suggest the right next step.
